Two river cities at opposite ends of the motorway, a limestone coast between Faro and Sagres, a volcanic island a thousand miles out, and a green one further still. Five bases, plus the palace town everyone adds on.

Limestone eaten into arches between Lagos and Albufeira, a cave with a hole in its roof that only opens from the water, dolphins working the Setúbal estuary, and flat-bottomed rabelos still tied up under the Porto bridges. More of Portugal is reached by hull than the map suggests.
Lisbon runs uphill, and Sintra is a train ride away.

The old town is a staircase with buildings on it, which is why half the city moves by tuk-tuk and funicular. Do the hills in the morning, take the western line out to the palaces after lunch, and leave the evening for a fado room. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the city.
Alfama on three wheels
Alfama and Graça are steep enough that the walking tours schedule rests. A tuk-tuk takes the gradients for you and stops where the miradouros are, which is the only reason to be up there.
Pena, Regaleira and the cliff
Pena runs on timed slots and the palace interior is the part that sells out, not the park. Most day trips bundle Regaleira and Cabo da Roca, which is the right shape for one long day.
A small room in Chiado
Fado is sung in rooms that hold forty people, the lights go down and nobody talks over it. Dinner-included tickets start early; the ones that start at ten are for the singing.

The Douro tastings explain port properly, the cellars in Gaia have the barrels, and a nata class is ninety minutes and the best souvenir going. Book the food walk before the heat and let lunch take the afternoon.

The Ribeira is a wall of tiled houses over the water, the six bridges are best counted from a boat, and every name on a port bottle has a lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia on the far bank. It is a two-day city that people keep stretching to four.

The Algarve is limestone, and the sea has been eating it for centuries.
Between Lagos and Albufeira the cliffs are undercut into arches, stacks and roofed caves, and almost none of it is reachable on foot. Boats leave from six marinas, the small ones get inside the caves, the big ones do not. Morning water is the calm water.

From a four-dollar walk in Alfama to a private day on the Douro.

Fado
Two guitars and one voice, one of them the pear-shaped Portuguese guitarra with twelve strings. It grew out of the dock quarters of Lisbon in the eighteen-hundreds and settled in Alfama and Mouraria, with a second home in the Porto Ribeira. Rooms are small, the lights go down between songs, and the audience is expected to shut up. Sets rarely start before nine.

The Benagil Cave
A sea cave near Carvoeiro whose limestone dome collapsed and left a circular opening straight up to the sky, with a beach inside that no road reaches. Landing was banned in 2023, so the visit is now from the water: speedboat, kayak or paddleboard, all of them at the mercy of the swell. The light column lands on the sand around the middle of the morning.

The Douro Terraces
The Douro was marked out as a wine region in 1756, before Bordeaux and before anywhere else, and the terraces holding the schist together were built with hand tools. Port went downriver on flat-bottomed rabelos until the dams went in; the ones moored at Gaia now are for photographs. Harvest is September, and the whole valley smells of it.

Most of Portugal can be arranged over breakfast the same morning. These four cannot: they run on entry slots, sea state, single daily departures and rooms that hold forty people.

This is the Atlantic, not the Mediterranean. A northerly gets up along the west coast most summer afternoons, the swell can shut the Algarve cave runs at a few hours’ notice, and the sea sits around eighteen degrees in August. Same answer to all three: take the boat in the morning and keep an indoor list for the afternoon.
